Challenge

This compact stone cottage was originally constructed as a larger dwelling for workers' on the local estate.

In the 1960s it was split into two separate properties and a bathroom was hastily installed into an upstairs bedroom, leaving one remaining bedroom and a large unused landing area. Despite some minor cosmetic updates, the property had been left relatively untouched for several decades when our clients acquired it.

The challenge was to return the property to 2 bedrooms whilst retaining an upstairs bathroom, and to bring back some of the charm lost during past alterations.

Outcome

Whilst the accommodation at first floor was poorly laid out, the property had a good amount of space to work with. By constructing a lightweight partition wall and adjusting existing drainage the bathroom was able to be relocated onto the large landing space, enabling the old bathroom to be converted back into a double bedroom.

Fortunately, much of the previous work to modernise the property had been carried out by covering up historic fabric and features. Careful striping back of modern finishes, coupled with introducing a combination of reclaimed and sympathetic new materials breathed life back into this 18th century cottage, upgrading the accommodation for 21st century living whilst restoring its character and charm.
