Challenge

Having remained almost untouched since its construction in the 1970s, this house was dated in style and awkward in layout. With a split level configuration and warren-like layout of living spaces, this house felt dark and unwelcoming.

The challenge was to create a light, bright open plan space to accommodate the kitchen, dining & living functions and connect with the garden, whilst updating the bedrooms and bathrooms to bring them up to modern standards.

Outcome

By removing partitions separating the old kitchen, dining and living rooms it was possible to create a single open plan space to accommodate all these functions.

Installing bifolding doors along one full elevation and inserting large rooflights above flooded the space with the light the clients craved. Whilst the finish is light and modern, careful use of natural materials such as oak and rattan soften the space and prevent it from feeling too clinical.

Spread across two further levels, the bedrooms and bathrooms were updated to create a master and guest bedroom on one level with shared bathroom, whilst reconfiguring the layout below created two generous kids rooms with shared shower room.

The pared back palate of colours and materials creates a calm but welcoming home fit for modern family life.
